Most of us get so excited about the project itself that we pay little attention to our surroundings. You have probably heard of horror stories where people forgot to lay down a drop cloth before painting their walls or furniture and ended up ruining their brand-new hardwood or laminate flooring. So before starting your painting project, invest in a drop cloth. It will only cost a couple of dollars and can save you thousands of dollars of cleaning and damages.

If you want a seamless finish, then you must sand off the previous stain  or paint before putting on a new layer. The pain will not cover everything; instead, it will grab onto uneven patches, which will make your paint look wonky. You might need some elbow grease to sand down the whole piece, but it will work out in your favor.

If you are putting on the same kind of paint and the paint on the furniture isn’t pealing or flaking, then you might be able to get away with not sanding. But keep in mind, sanding is always recommended.

If you want your paint to be smooth, then you must wipe it down after sanding. You could use a normal microfiber cloth or a tack cloth. A tack cloth does a much better job at cleaning because it attracts dust particles. But, if you can’t get your hands on tack cloth or even a microfiber cloth, a rag will do the trick. However, you might need to go over it a few times.

Primer will not only even out the surface of your furniture, but it will also increase the adhesion and durability of the paint. You can either brush it onto the furniture, following the direction or the grain, or you could use the spray version. The spraying method works well because it applies a much thinner coat and gives a nice and even surface for you to work with. You can skip the primer only if you use a paint that already comes premixed with a primer.
